The Best Thank You Note from a Reader of My Watir Book

The book
Feedback like this makes me want to spend even more of my time writing the Watir Book and giving it away for free*.

Thanks for wasting a bunch of my time. Next time, before you publish something you might want to check that it works. I’ve spent 5 hours trying to get this shit to run and I can’t get the dev kit (ruby dk.rb install) to install. A search indicates that I’m not the only one having this issue. WHat a BUSH operation: from Ruby to Watir to YOU.

Please: take your page down — stop wasting peoples’ time.

On your BEST DAY, you’re an IDIOT.

* I am selling the book, but all content is available on GitHub for free. I have spent hundreds of hours on the book so far, and I have earned about $200. Do the math.

Update: I have replied after I updated the instructions.

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words. Since you have asked so nicely, I have just spent another afternoon and evening away from my family, updating instructions on how to install Watir:

https://github.com/zeljkofilipin/watirbook/blob/master/installation/windows.md

I did it just for you, for free of course, as always. Please notice new chapter, DevKit.

Regards,

Željko

  1. Congratulations. You have now been attacked for doing your best to help other people. That comes as part of being a writer and a public person. Get used to it. It gets easier to bear with time.

  2. Thanks Bret.

  3. That was exceedingly good grammar for a flame email. I’m afraid that person may actually be a professional somewhere…

I’ve been working with WATIR for about 7 years and I still check your blog daily for new features to take advantage of. Thanks for sharing the knowledge – a good part of mine came from you.

  4. Adam, I know the frustration of not even being able to install something. As far as I can see, the problem is not even in Watir, but in DevKit. Anyway, if he reported the problem, I would probably find a solution and let him know. Since he sent this, I did not even reply.

  5. I feel your pain. My “best” comment was “You are a moran” when I shared some insights worth couple of years in the trenches… I was thinking about writing the post about it… (I guess he meant moron, good thing I get to moderate comments on by blog :) )

  6. Funny that he didn’t ask you for help with the dev kit, he just assumed that you were spreading lies, and went straight for the personal insults. That’s what we call trolling.

Kresimir, maybe he was calling you a Multi-Operator Radio Access Network? :)

  7. I have been thinking should I publish my reply or not. Well, I have just published it.
